Having the Mindset of a Millionaire #1 (Financial Fridays)

Why have a poverty mindset? Choose to have a Millionaire Mindset!

Why have a poverty mindset? Choose to have a Millionaire Mindset!

Back in March 2008… my wife Melinda and I went to Las Vegas for the first time in our lives. We were excited, thrilled, and pretty stoked to see what this city had to offer. But alas, we made a BIG mistake!

That big mistake was this: Staying at a resort at the north end of the strip called the Circus, Circus.

I won’t go into TOO many details on how bad our stay was at this hotel… but in summary I can say that if you don’t mind smoke-stained walls, dingy carpet that hasn’t been changed since the 1970’s, and itchy blankets on your bed… stay here!

Fast forward a few months later to July 2008. This time we had learned our lesson… and decided to stay at the Platinum Hotel and Spa… which was the BEST hotel we have EVER stayed at!

We were placed in a HUGE 1,500 sq. foot deluxe, sparkling suite that overlooked the beautiful Las Vegas strip… and the fabulous mountains in the background. There was a huge whirlpool jacuzzi that could fit up to 6 people in our room. We had our own personal washer & dryer. State-of-the-art fitness equipment and daily massages were at our call!

This place was fit for ROYALTY.

The thing that had changed for me and Melinda between our two visits to Las Vegas that year was this:

We got the bad end of the deal the 1st time we stayed at a Vegas hotel… and we will be danged if we get a bad deal like that TWO times in a row! We stayed at a crappy hotel the first time… but we both agreed that, that would NOT happen again.

Yes I know… I probably use the word ‘crap’ too much in my writings… but hey, I never proclaimed that I had an extensive vocabulary… so leave me alone (LOL!)

It’s on this point that I want to talk about having a Millionaire Mindset. God tells us in Deuteronomy 8:18 this: “But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the POWER to produce wealth…”

So now we know God gives us the power… or the ability to get wealth…. so do we just sit by patiently waiting for it to drop in our laps?

No way Jose! You get up… and take what is yours!

When I look back over how through God’s abundant blessings… we were able to put ourselves on a road to start building wealth… I can honestly say that it started with a mindset change…

Too often, as a result of upbringing, our parents, school systems, friends, whatever — our minds have been conditioned to have a poverty mindset.

A person with a poverty mindset just can’t become wealthy… and even if he/she does get wealth through let’s say an inheritance or winning the lottery, they will most likely lose it all.

On the other hand, if you drop a person like Donald Trump or Oprah Winfrey off in Haiti (the poorest country in the western hemisphere)… and take away all their wealth and finances… I can guarantee you, within 5 years they will be worth millions once again!

Why? Because they both have a Millionaire Mindset.

My own personal mindset change all started out with 4 IMPORTANT principles that I decided to follow (which I will cover every Friday for the next month):

(1) Not Going Back to Crap!
(2) Educating Yourself!
(3) Believing in Yourself!
(4) Taking Action!

Not Going Back to Crap!

When it comes to money or whatever station you are at in your finances presently… make up in your mind that this will be the LOWEST state that you will ever have in your finances.

Back in 2002 when I declared bankruptcy at 22 years of age… I made myself a solemn promise that something like this would NEVER happen again. I didn’t exactly know how I would prevent myself from deteriorating back to that condition… but I was firm on my decision:

I hate being broke. Nothing is worse than being broke. Being broke is a joke.

My mind was made up that I would NOT return back to this crappy, embarassing, and soul-sucking condition of bankruptcy that I had faced. For those of you have declared bankruptcy before… you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.

When you can change your mindset and believe in something… I believe that God honors that decision… and gives you favor along with resources to aid you to reach whatever your mind seeks to attain!

For me… 2002 was a crossroads in all aspects of my life (relationships, finances, education, my future)… and I had a made-up mind that I would travel forward from that point, and NEVER backwards.

I invite you right now friend… wherever you are at in your financial life, if you are NOT at the point or path where you know you should be… or if you are struggling financially (and no, God does NOT want you to be broke)… make a decision right now as you are reading this, that this is the lowest point in your finances you will ever be at in your life.

You might not know how you are going to get out of debt… you might not know how you are going to raise your income level… you might now know how you will start your business… but that’s okay for right now!

I just need for you to believe in your mind and heart, that as far as your finances are concerned… you are at the bottom right now, and the ONLY place you can move from this point… is up!

Let’s do some homework right now:

(1) Take out a piece of 8″ x 12″ paper out now and a marker (or pen).
(2) At the bottom third of the paper… write down Friday, June 26, 2009… (or whatever today’s date is)
(3) At the middle third of the paper… draw a BIG arrow pointing up (above the date)
(4) At the top third of the paper (above the arrow) write down “As of this date… My Finances will only get better. God has given me the POWER to get wealth!”
(5) Hang it up on your wall next to your 10 declarations… and look at it everyday, repeat those words, and believe it!

This is the START of having a Millionaire Mindset! Tune in next Friday, where we will discuss “Educating Your Mind to Be a Millionaire”.

Have fun this weekend, be blessed, rest in peace to the living legend — the King of Pop Michael Jackson… and may you walk in God’s abundance for your life, today!

Need More Money in Your Pockets? Keep Reading if You Do… Part #3

I take it if you’re reading this, then your answer to the question, “Need More Money in Your Pockets…?” is probably YES!

The Bible says in 3 John 1:2, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you would PROSPER, and be in good health… even as your soul PROSPERS!

This PROSPERITY the Bible speaks about is not only for your finances… but also in your health, spiritual-life, family, and all aspects of your life.

Prosperity means many different things to many different people… but I’m sure we can agree that prosperity can mean “abundance”, “increase”,  and “wealth” in one’s life.

While I don’t believe that everybody will be filthy-rich like a Warren Buffet… or an Oprah Winfrey… I do believe that in the area of finances, God DOES NOT want any of His children to walk in poverty, be dodging bill collectors, parking our cars half-a-mile away from our house so the repo-man doesn’t get it… you get the point. We should NOT be walking around this earth poor, broke, and destitute!

Before you keep reading this juicy post… you’ll want to get familiar with the first two posts that were done back in December & February:

Part #1 is how you “Spend Your Way into Prosperity”. Sound contradictorary? Who cares how crazy it sounds… it works my friend! In a nutshell it says (1) Pay God First,  (2) Pay Yourself Second,  (3) Pay Those Bills on Time.

This is the link to read the whole post on Part #1

Part #2 is how you can “Simple Ways to Increase Your Income”. This post has a lot of meat and potatoes in it… and will fill you up if you’re hungry! In a nutshell it says (1) Focus in on your talent and (2) Three Simple Ways to Increase Your Income.

This is the link to read the whole post on Part #2.

That said… my wife and I have done financial workshops in the past in the church and in the community… and many times, people will ask, “What is the SECRET to Increase My Finances”…

… and my response would always be the same: “Shhhh… don’t tell anybody. The secret to increasing your finances is this: Make more money and/or spend less money.”

Nice, deep advice… huh? I ticked off more than a couple people with that type of advice.

But in reality it is true… and with most things in life… there is typically a SIMPLE process behind getting what you want in life, but executing that process is what is DIFFICULT for many.

The basics behind having more money and being more financially stable are: “Make more money and/or spend less money.” — Follow this process to a ‘T’, and I can assure with almost 100% certainty that you will ALWAYS be able have a nice roof over your head… a nice car to drive in… nice clothes to wear… be able to take nice vacations with your loved ones… be able to bless others around you… and NOT go in debt doing so.

Part #3 is going to deal with this topic: How to Get Out of Debt.

When my wife and I got out of debt some years ago… we followed the Dave Ramsey plan. We were lucky enough to find out about it while we were still pretty young (about 23 and 24 years old). We executed the plan, and completely got out of debt.

FACT: You simply CANNOT become wealthy financially… if you have an excess amount of debt.

Here is his plan:

(1) SAVE $1,000 IN AN EMERGENCY FUND:
Whatever it takes for you to get money in your savings account… do it! Sell stuff on eBay, Craigslist, garage sales, cut yards, deliver pizza, whatever… get at LEAST $1,000 in your savings account. What this does is to (A) Give you pride that you’re able to save a significant amount of money… and  (B) Helps to protect you for emergencies that happen in life (ex. car breakdowns, etc.)

(2) PAY OFF ALL YOUR DEBTS USING THE DEBT SNOWBALL:
Write down all the debts you have MINUS your mortgage (ex. car payment, credit cards, hospital bills, school loans) on paper, from the highest monthly bill you pay each month… to the lowest. Use the money that you used in STEP ONE to fund your emergency fund, to pay off the HIGHEST monthly bill first.

Keep on paying the minimum amounts required by all your other debts… and attack the highest debt. When you have killed that debt, move on to the next debt, and keep knocking them out until you have NO debts.

The typical person who follows this advice faithfully can be debt free in about 18-24 months.

(3) SAVE UP 3 TO 6 MONTHS OF BILLS IN YOUR SAVINGS

(4) INVEST 15% OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD INCOME INTO INVESTMENTS

(5) COLLEGE FUNDING FOR YOUR KIDS

(6) PAY OFF YOUR HOME EARLY
People say you have to have a mortgage for 20, 30, even 40 years? The devil is a lie.

(7) KEEP BUILDING WEALTH AND BE A GIVER!

Let me know what you think about this post… if you have any questions message me… and I’ll see you at the top baby!

Need More Money in Your Pocket? Keep Reading if You Do… Part #2

Back in late December, I wrote a blog post on TodayAbundance.com titled “Need More Money in Your Pocket? Keep Reading if You Do…

In essence, I wrote down 3 major & practical rules that my wife and I have followed… which have brought us tremendous financial success these past few years.

The rules that we follow to a “T” are as follows:

1) Give away the first 10% of your income (church, non-profit agency, etc.)
2) Save the second 10% of your income (savings account, investment, debt reduction)
3) Pay all Your Bills on Time (this shows God, you are a GOOD steward of the money that you already have… and that you are responsible to handle even more money)

Do these 3 rules sound crazy? Well who cares… they work! While everybody else complains about the economy being crazy… while everybody else complains about their mortgages skyrocketing through the roof… while everybody else complains about job insecurity… me and my household sleep GOOD and PEACEFUL at night.

To read the original blog post, CLICK HERE NOW:

At the end of that original blog post, I promised more tips… and here are 2 more tips:

#1) FOCUS…. FOCUS…. FOCUS!

Whatever it is that you do for income (or aspire to do)… focus in on it and become GREAt at it. Let the main thing be the main thing. Don’t be a jack of all-trades… and a master of none, because the only thing you’ll have at the end of the day in your bank account… is jack squat!

So whether you are in business for yourself… or you work at a company or organization, set the limits high for yourself… and make it your prime goal to become the BEST at your job and position, and watch the dollars follow behind you.

Learn all that you can & master your work position through books, seminars, classes, videos, online research, through mentors, whatever it takes… do it and don’t complain, because losers gripe and cry… but winners tough it out and accomplish what needs to be accomplished by “any means necessary!”

#2) Need to Increase Your Income Level? Try any of these 3 ideas.

The following are the 3 ideas at the top of my list for increasing your income long-term:

A. Sales Position (the highest paying job in the world)
Yeah, I know sales jobs in general suck… but they are still the “highest paying job” in the world! A good salesman (or saleswoman) can earn a 6-figure… and even 7-figure income salaries a year, depending on what they are selling and how high the commissions are.

Sales positions are good, because very rarely do you need a college degree… all you need is ambition, drive, and a friendly personality. Sales positions you can get into include: car sales, insurance sales, real estate, medical, pharmacutical.

B. Go to a 2-Year/4-Year College
This is GREAT option for younger folks, obviously. I won’t go into the details of why getting a 4-year or Master’s degree can increase your income, but did you know that there are a few positions (such as a registered nurse, radiology tech, information technology, etc.) that you can go to a 2-year Junior college… and start making $60,000+ a year? Not too bad of a salary for 2 years of your life… is it?

C. Start Your Own Business
Yes sir…. this is my favorite one. Why work for “the man”… when you can become “the man”? There are many businesses that you can start… that allow you to supplement your current income… and even replace it, that don’t cost a lot of money or capital to start up.

Some businesses that come to mind include: Selling goods on eBay, housecleaning, lawncare, daycare, life coaching, painting, roofing, being a virtual assistant, importing/exporting goods, and anything Internet related.

Trust me, you can make good money with little capital or money in your bank account. I started up my little Internet business in 2004 with $50 for advertising expenses and to build a website… and while I won’t tell you how much profit I made in 2008, I can tell you that my advertising expenses were well over $150,000 last year… and was still able to eat pretty nicely at the end of the day.

It is possible for ANYBODY to go from zero to hero in a short amount of time… and I’m a witness to that.

Until next time, walk in the full blessings, favor, and abundance… which are in Jesus Christ!

Need More Money in Your Pocket? Keep Reading if You Do…

Okay, so it’s Christmas time and we all hear the bells ringing… and see the snowflakes falling… and some of us feel our bank accounts crashing.

Ouch… you know that hurts!

Whether we might feel the “holiday pinch”, because we have spent too much of our hard earned dough on expensive Christmas gifts, or trying to impress certain people, or paying

high heating bills… I have a tried and tested solution to ALL your problems.

Well, not all your problems… just the financial ones :o)

The Bible states this fact and law of nature: “Give, and it shall be given to you. In good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will men pour into your lap.

For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Simply put… if you want more… give more.

Yeah, I know this sounds pretty funky… and might seem highly contradictory to common sense and everything others have told you about money.

But the fact is this: If the common methods of making and saving money worked… your average American wouldn’t spend 103% of their income, be thousands of dollars in debt, and be 3 months away from bankruptcy if they were to lose their job today.

So let me throw down a few BASIC guidelines that I and my wife have personally used in our financial life… and which brought me from bankruptcy, bad credit, and low paid jobs in 2001… to having increased my income by over 1500%, having 747 credit, and having 3 paid off cars and a soon to be paid off house in 2008.

In the coming weeks I’ll share a few tips on finances, but this 3-Step Giving Principle is a great beginning step for anyone and everyone to use!

——————–

1) GIVE GOD THE FIRST 10% OF YOUR MONEY

Oh my God… did he just say give away 10% of my money? And to church??? I sure did! God richly blesses us all with jobs and income to the point that as Americans… we are better off financially than 97% of the world’s population.

It is a way for us to give thanks to Him for blessing us with what we already do have (even if it is a low-paying job, or a “dead-end job”). Be thankful for what you do have now… knowing that as you work faithfully at your current position… God is preparing to exalt you to a higher position when the time is right.

A good church helps to build up the community around it both spiritually and naturally (through feeding programs, shelters, clothing ministries, programs that keep kids off the street, jail ministries, etc.) and these houses of God need more than just prayer to keep them running…

For those of you not in church (which I highly recommend you find a good one if you don’t)… give your 10% to a charity or non-profit organization that is devoted to a cause that truly touches your heart.

It could be an organization that feeds hungry children in Africa… or saves the rainforests in South America… or helps to shelter the homeless tsunami victims in Asia… or even something as local as giving to a charity that serves victims of domestic or child abuse in America.

When you start taking care of those less fortunate than you… God will start to take care of you!

2) GIVE YOURSELF THE SECOND 10% OF YOUR MONEY

By saying this, I mean become a good steward of your money and pay yourself. You do this by saving at LEAST 10% of all the money you make in a savings account, retirement fund, investment, etc.

We all have plans in life and sometimes life can be a tool… and throw a wrench in our plans… so it is always good to have an account full of money to keep yourself protected in case of unexpected bills (such as a car breakdown, etc.)

After 10 months of saving your money… you will have exactly 1 months of paychecks saved up in you account. In 6-8 years depending on how much interest your making, you will have ONE year of your salary saved up!

People who have savings are less stressed, worried, and anxious than those who have NO savings or very little savings… because we’re not worried about common issues like: What if I get laid off, or what if the furnace needs to be replaced, or what if I get sick and can’t work for a week or two.

3) PAY YOUR BILLS ON TIME

Okay, so if you followed my methods and are somewhat good at math… you now have 80% of your income left. By know you’re probably asking this question: “How can I possibly survive off of 80% of my income???

Good question — but how about this question, “If you’re job was to cut your pay by 80%, and you couldn’t find another higher paying job… could you survive?

The answer will probably be a resounding ‘Yes!’. You would survive by cutting back on non-important expenses that wastes your money.

So what to do with the other 80% of your income?

Pay your bills with a smile on your face.

Don’t let bills go late, or go in default and get late fees, don’t wait until the water company sends you a 3-day cut-off notice before you pay the bill.

Devise a system to pay off past debts that you owe… such as school and car loans, medical bills, etc. as SOON as possible. The less debt you have, the easier life will be.

TRUST ME!

By paying others in a respectful and timely manner… and by having a heart of giving, God will open up HUGE doors for you that cannot and will not be shut… and He will open up opportunities for you that you couldn’t ever fathom with your bad self!

The giving principle works with ALL aspects of your life. If you are feeling lonely, give time to someone else is who is lonely. If you are sick in your body, give time and volunteer to help old folks in the nursing home. If you are sad, give kind words to people all around you.

I challenge you to take a 30-Day challenge and make it your New Year’s Resolution to Give Your Way to the Top in 2009!
